Charismatic green jungles, epic mountain scenery, giddying hill peaks and captivating history charms one naturally. But, who will ask for more when each of these charming destinations is only a two hour drive from the other – an advantage no other destination will offer.

Yes, we are talking of God’s Own Country – Kerala.

From awesome seashores along the Malabar shore to the labyrinth of backwater pathways in Alleppey to the fantastic verdant hillside tea gardens in Munnar, Kerala enjoys the partiality of Mother Nature and has a lot to offer to tourists.

 

Season

Bestowed with a pleasant and equable climate throughout the year, Kerala is a tropical land with the coast running down its entire length and the Western Ghats forming a protective barrier against the dry winds from up north.

The monsoons (June-November) and summer (February-May) are the seasons markedly experienced here, while winter is only a slight drop in temperature from the normal range of 28-32°C.

 

How to reach Kerala

Kerala can be accessed by air as the state has three major international airports. One in the southern part – Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, one in central Kerala – the Cochin International Airport and the other in northern part – Karipur or Calicut International Airport.

Besides this, Kerala can easily be accessible by railway networks and road transport.

 

Places to visit:

Kochi

Known as the ‘Gateway to Kerala’, Kochi is an enchanting city that has an eclectic influence. The architecture and historical sites in Fort Kochi attract most of the visitors to the area.

City of Kochi is the best tourist destination in Kerala and sixth best in India. Though the tourist destination is known as Kochi, it is a part of Ernakulam which is a beautiful district located on the coast of the Arabian Sea. Ernakulam is also titled as the ‘Queen of Arabian Sea’ as it is one of the finest natural harbors in the world.

A famous 13th century Italian traveller aptly remarked: “If China is where you make money, then Cochin (Kochi) surely is the place where you spend it!”

Munnar

Munnar means ‘three rivers’ in Malayalam and derives its name from the confluence of three mountain streams – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly. Known as the ‘Kashmir of South India’, Munnar is a small hill station in the Idukki district.

The lush green landscape, waterfalls, lakes, forests and tea plantations make this place a heaven on earth. Adventure enthusiasts can trek to Anamudi, the highest peak in south India, explore Eravikulam National Park, or go rock climbing and paragliding.

Alleppey

Alleppey is well known for the backwater trips on houseboats and always comes on top among the best destinations to check out in Kerala. Alappuzha, also called Alleppey attracts several thousands of foreign tourists each year.

The intricate networks of canals that snake their way through the vast expanse of  paddy fields, through the lanes give Alappuzha the sobriquet of Venice of the East. The district is famous for its boat races houseboat holidays, beaches , marine products and coir industry.

Thekkady

Thekkady offers a great chance to view wildlife while on a cruise. From the mighty Indian elephant to the great Indian tiger, this place  has it all. Deers, boars, bisons and lion-tailed macaques are a common sight in the reservoir area.

Plantations and hill stations offer a picturesque setting to the place. Thekkady’s scenic beauty, along with its wildlife, has been attracting tourists and visitors from all over the world for years.

Vagamon

Rated as one of the best beaches in India even before Kerala Tourism shot into prominence, Kovalam is the favorite option of many tourists for relaxing in the sun. Situated 16 kms away from the city of Trivandrum, Kovalam has three enchanting beaches.

The largest of all the three beaches is the Lighthouse Beach. Hawah Beach is the second largest one here and the third beach is Samudra.

Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees and it stands true to its name. The village offers an endless sight of coconut trees. Known as the paradise of South, Kovalam is one of the most sought after destinations in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram

The capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram is situated west coast of India and bordered by Tiruneveli, Kollam and Kanyakumari. Also known as Trivandrum, Thiruvananthapuram is the evergreen city of India and also considered as one of the 10 greenest cities in India.

The city also holds India’s first IT Park and Asia’s third largest Technopark, making it a land of technology as well. As large as it is, Thiruvananthapuram has many breathtaking locations, of which some must-visits are Kuthiramalika Palace Museum, Napier Museum, Ponmudi, Kovalam, Veli Tourist Village and Thenmala.

Thrissur

Known to most by its anglicised name Trichur, Thrissur is also called the ‘Cultural Capital of Kerala’. Built around a 65-acre hillock, Thrissur is home to several temples, learning centers, cultural centers, churches and several colorful cultural festivals.

The city hosts many cultural, spiritual and religious festival of the state, of which, Thrissur Pooram Festival is the most colorful and spectacular one. Puli Kali also known as Tiger dance is one of the most popular folk art performed here during Onam festival.

Wayanad

The district of Wayanad is located in the northeast of Kerala on the high altitudes of majestic Western Ghats. Wayanad is one of the least-explored area of Kerala and major portion are tribal habitat.

District of Wayanad is full of attractions with mountains peaks, rivers, lakes and waterfall. Meenmutty Falls, a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 metres, is located in Kalpetta. Chembra Peak, near Meppadi town, brings the whole Wayanad Falls within your vision range and you also get to view Kozhikkode, Nilgiris and Malappuram.

Kannur

Kannur or Cannanore, means the land of Lord Krishna, is a city located in the district of Kannur on the North Malabar region of Kerala. The city is famous for its Theyyam art, pristine beaches and adventure tourism.

Muzhappilangad drive-in beach is the most popular beach here and only one drive-in beach in Asia. Other beaches are Payyambalam, Meenkunnu and Ezhara beaches.

Varkala

Located by the cliffs adjacent to the Arabian Sea, Varkala is known for its several ayurvedic treatment centers and spas. The city enjoys a favorable climate throughout the year and due to its religious importance, is often referred to as the ‘Kashi of the South’.

Almost 51 miles away from Thiruvananthapuram, on its northern side, Varkala has the appeal and potential to entice guests from all over the world with its natural charm and high cliffs. It’s not surprising that Varkala is one of India’s best beaches.

Poovar Island

Kerala & Backwaters
