Galwan Valley clash: All you need to know

The violent face-off between Indian and Chinese troops along the contested Line of Actual Control in Galwan Valley of Ladakh during the ‘de-escalation process’ comes at at a time when Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army have been looking at each other in the eye since May.

Needless to say, the clash, which claimed the life of an Indian Army Colonel and two soldiers, has further ratcheted tension between the two neighbours and put the focus back on strained bilateral relations. Army Chief Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane cancelled his scheduled visit to Pathankot on Tuesday.

TOP DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CASE

Skirmish between the two sides happened on Monday night. Army statement said: During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties on both sides. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.

The Indian Army Colonel who lost his life was from the Bihar regiment. Reportedly, there was no firing but violent physical scuffles and stone attacks as per reports.

Chinese government mouthpiece Global Times’ Editor-in-Chief Hu Xijing tweeted about reports of casualties on the Chinese side as well and also issued a veiled threat to India saying China doesn’t wan’t to go to war with India “but we don’t fear it”.

Speaking to Reuters, China’s foreign ministry put the onus on India and said India should not take unilateral actions or stir up trouble.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the ground situation via video conferencing post his meeting with Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

GENESIS OF THE DISPUTE

Indian Army and PLA have locked horns for nearly six weeks now. The 3,488 km de-facto boundary between India and China has been in the news for troop build up on both sides. Incidentally, Galwan River was the one of the epicentres of the 1962 Indo-China war as well. Stand-off continues at the dispued Pangong Tso, located at an altitude of 14,000 feet on the Tibetan Plateau, as well. Both sides have claimed the areas as there own territory.
