Forbes List: Now we’re talking women empowerment!

Date:

Picture an Indian woman and picture a domestic roti machine; a woman with flour-stained attires; a woman with a rolling pin and kids. Picture an Indian woman and picture an oppressed lady. Is any of this true? No. Picture an Indian woman and you’ll see four of them on the Forbes list of the World’s 100 most powerful women.

Meet SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya,  ICICI bank head Chanda Kochhar, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and HT Media Chair Shobhana Bhartia, who stand as the epitome of a modern Indian woman. Educated and self-sufficient, these women have become the game-changers and role models for every Indian woman who aspires to make the world her oyster.

SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya

When Arundhati took over the SBI reigns, she know what she was up against. SBI barely used technology and she understood that if this would continue, it would be a wild goose chase. Therefore, when she got into the system, she changed things gradually, without bursting the bubble in a single prick. Perhaps that is something that has earned this 59-year-old the 30th spot in this coveted list. The fact that she is the first woman to be the Chairperson of SBI is another feather to her hat.

ICICI Head Chanda Kochhar

With a consolidated asset base of $132 billion, ICICI Bank is India’s largest private sector bank and it is present across 17 countries. It already had a representative office in China, which it had opened over 10 years ago in 2003. Now meet the woman who runs the show, 53-year-old Chanda Kochhar. If that doesn’t get her to the 35th spot in the Forbes list, nothing else will.

Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Being on such influential lists isn’t a new thing for 62-year-old Bangalorean Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. Her company, dealing with bio-chemicals has helped her bolster her career and she, in turn has just done the same for it. Ranked No. 2 on ‘The Medicine Maker Power List’ 2015, an index of the 100 most influential people across the globe in the field of medicine, it’s no surprise that she is ranked 85th in the list dished out by Forbes.

HT Media Chair Shobhana Bhartia

Being in the business of media can be a nasty experience and to sail through, one needs patience, guts and a lot of determination. All these become doubly difficult when the person concerned happens to be a woman. But then, Shobhana Bhartia has redefined norms and has carved out a niche of her own, and that’s why this 58-year old is on the 93rd spot.
