Ahmedabad: A Swiss-built solar plane Solar Impulse 2, the first solar-powered plane to attempt to fly around the world, successfully landed in Ahmedabad late on Tuesday night. Solar Impulse 2 took off from Abu Dabi in the United Arab Emirates on Monday at the start of a five-month journey of 35,000 km organized to focus the world’s attention on sustainable energy.Â
It made a stopover in Omani capital Muscat from where it took off on Tuesday to begin the second leg of its journey. The plane is only as heavy as a family car but has a wingspan as wide as the largest passenger airliner. Its journey will span approximately 25 flight days broken up into 12 legs at speeds between 50 and 100 km (30 to 60 miles) per hour. Aditya Birla Group is the plane’s host in India.
