New Delhi:Â The Sports Ministry has recommended hockey legend Dhyan Chand’s name for Bharat Ratna. Sources in the PMO say suggestions for various names have come in, while the final decision is yet to be taken.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju informed the Lok Sabha that the Union Home Ministry has sent recommendations for Bharat Ratna for late Major Dhyan Chand to PMO after MHA received recommendations from several quarters.
Dhyan Chand had won three Olympic gold medals for hockey for India between 1928 and 1936.
There has been speculation that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the frontrunner for the Bharat Ratna honour, followed by Subhash Chandra Bose. Meanwhile, other suggestions like those of Bhagat Singh and Veer Savarkar have also been made by Congress and Shiv Sena.
