Delhi Court adjourns case, even as Nirbhaya’s mother breaks down in despair

Date:

Asha Devi, mother of Nirbhaya on Wednesday broke down in the court pleading with folded hands to the judges to issue fresh death warrants against the convicts in the brutal gang rape and murder of her daughter in 2012.

This came even as a Delhi court decided to provide legal aid to convict Pavan Kumar, one of the four convicts awaiting the final execution of the sentence. They have given the list of empanelled lawyers to choose from, for the convict.

The convict has a fundamental right to be represented in a court of law and it is the duty of the state to provide free legal aid to certain vulnerable sections of the society and those who cannot afford to hire the services of legal professionals.

Fearing that the new lawyer will delay the matter further considering an in-depth study has to be carried out before the representation, the mother asked as to whether she had any rights and can claim justice from the court.

The matter has been adjourned now.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court while admitting the appeal filed by the Union government also permitted the parties to the case to approach the trial court for issuance of fresh death execution warrant.

The Union Home Ministry challenged the decision of the Delhi High Court to stay the execution of the four convicts till the time all legal remedies are exhausted.

The brutal gang rape and murder of a young para-medic student on December 16, 2012 shocked the entire nation and shifted the focus on safety on women around the country.
