Crane Bedi may not be lifting BJP

Date:

New Delhi: With less than a week to go for election polling in New Delhi, a triangular battle between Congress, Bhartiya Janata Party and Aam Aadmi Party has emerged for the coveted seat of the chief minister of the national capital.

As the race heats up, political parties have kicked off their campaigns in full swing and allegations and counter-allegations are flying thick all over the place.

However, opinion polls taken across the capital indicate that AAP is the front runner to come to power in New Delhi, riding high on the public appreciation of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who has been the face of the party’s campaign all over India.

While AAP is leading the pack with 46% public voteshare, Kiran Bedi led BJP campaign is a point behind at 45%. However, AAP’s voteshare may go up by 4% to 50% while the BJP’s share by drop by 4% to 41%.

Despite the optimistic situation for BJP, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is the most preferred candidate to become the chief minister with 51% votes, followed by Kiran Bedi with roughly 40% votes who is not being able to help get additional vote-share for the BJP.

Kejriwal has found a huge support system in Muslims, SC/ST/OBC and lower income groups who have tipped the scales by 4% in his favour. Also, the young respondents between ages 18-23 have said they will vote for Kejriwal.

BJP’s voteshare comes only because of support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies rather than Kiran Bedi who is the face of the campaign in the capital. However, BJP may also have lost out on public opinion because of infighting within the party which came to light after BJP chief Satish Upadhyay who was not made the face of the campaign.
