Canadians dance to double gold at GP final

Date:

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje danced their way to Canada’s second gold of the night at the ISU Grand Prix of figure skating final on Saturday.

The world silver medallists claimed their first Grand Prix ice dancing title after Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford had earlier won the pairs.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva led a Russian 1-2 ahead of Elena Radionova in the women’s event with American Ashley Wagner taking bronze.

Weaver, 25, and Poje, 27, had taken the lead with a Paso Doble short dance on Friday night and continued their career best scores with a seamless free skate to Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’.

They scored 109.80 for the free skate and 181.14 overall.

Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates, looking to follow compatriots — Olympic champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White — the holders of a record five consecutive titles since 2009 took silver.

Chock and Bates had fallen behind after a tumble at the end of their short programme, but snatched second for their skate to ‘An American in Paris’ for which they scored 102.03 and 167.09 overall.

France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron moved up from fifth after the short dance to take bronze in the first Grand Prix final, scoring 100.91 for their skate to Mozart’s Concerto No 23 for an overall 162.39.
