Mumbai: Actor-turned-politician, Urmila Matondkar, who recently joined Congress will contest from the Mumbai North parliamentary constituency for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha election, Congress announced on Friday.
Matondkar was inducted into the party on Wednesday in a presser by Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora in New Delhi.

“The Congress central election committee has approved the candidature of Urmila Matondkar as party candidate to contest the ensuing general elections from Mumbai North parliamentary constituency in Maharashtra,” a party statement said. She will contest against BJP incumbent MP Gopal Shetty.

While joining the grand old party earlier this week, she said “I would like to thank all Congress members, especially Rahul Gandhi ji for giving me a warm welcome. Today is a big day for me as I enter into politics. My family works on the principles of Nehru ji and Gandhi ji. Freedom of speech is necessary in the country. Today, this freedom is in danger. I’m not here to show glamour. I am here to stay; I am here because I have faith in Congress’ ideology.”
On Tuesday, former SP MP and actor Jaya Prada joined the BJP and she will fight against her one-time arch-rival Azam Khan of SP in Rampur (UP) parliamentary constituency in the upcoming national election.
While another actress Hema Malini and sitting BJP MP from Mathura Lok Sabha seat will re-contesting elections from the constituency. She filed her nomination papers on Monday.
