Fact Check: 2019 Image Fictitiously Shared As IDF Sniper ‘Barib Yariel’ Killed By Hamas

An image depicting a sniper on the ground is being widely circulated on social media, claiming that it portrays Barib Yariel, an accomplished sniper in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), allegedly killed by the Hamas.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “One of Israel’s best snipers Barib Yariel, was killed by a Hamas sniper. Yariel had a 100% success rate until the one time his enemy had a weapon. It is possible Yariel would still be with us if he hadn’t been focused on shooting Palestinian kids in the knee-caps”.

Here’s the link to the above post.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running a Reverse Image Search, our team spotted an image of a soldier identified as Barib Yariel that matches with a picture in an article by the SNN website — Iranian news agency, dated October 3, 2019, covering the Palestinian youths injured in IDF firing.

The image has been consistently shared in various articles over the years, spanning from 2020 to 2023.

Searching further on Google, we could not find any name by “Barib Yariel” on or before November 8. Even examining the IDF’s list of casualties yielded no results for Israeli military personnel by the name ‘Barib Yariel.’

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old unrelated image of a sniper is shared with fictitious claims.
