The ministry of education in Gaza has decided to suspend the school admissions for 2023-2024, affecting approximately 625,000 students in the besieged enclave. This decision comes in the midst of ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, resulting in the displacement of over 1.5 million Palestinians. Tens of thousands of individuals have sought shelter in schools after being forcibly displaced from the northern part of the Strip.
Amid this, an image is circulating on social media, suggesting that all the children in a Gaza school have become martyrs. The image depicts a woman standing in the centre of a classroom where each seat is adorned with bouquets of flowers.
The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ഞങ്ങൾ ലക്ഷ്യം കൈവരിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. (English translation: See below.)

Upon conducting a reverse image search of the viral image, the NM team found several media reports carrying the same viral picture. The international human rights organisation, ‘Human Rights Watch,’ released a report on July 2, 2021, which included the image. The caption of the image reveals that it depicts the mother of a student who lost life in the explosion at the Sayed Al-Shuhada Girls’ School in Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 8, 2021, after arriving in her classroom. The photograph was captured by Rahmat Gul, a photographer associated with Associated Press (AP), on May 16, 2021.
The same image was also found on the Alamy stock images website with a similar description, crediting AP.
According to reports, the explosive device was packed into a car parked near the Syed-al-Shuhada school in Dasht-e-Barchi, a Shia Hazara area in western Kabul. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of 85 lives, with approximately 200 individuals sustaining injuries. Most of the victims were girls aged between 11 and 15. It’s noteworthy that the bombing took place during the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
Thus, it is confirmed that an old unrelated image is falsely linked to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
