New Delhi: Australia secured a crucial 62-run victory against Pakistan in a high-scoring World Cup match, marking their second consecutive win in the campaign. The outstanding centuries by opening duo David Warner and Mitchell Marsh played an important role in the win.
Despite Pakistan winning the toss and choosing to bowl, their captain Babar Azam’s aspirations for early wickets faded rapidly as David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121) displayed a formidable performance, establishing a remarkable 259-run partnership.
Australia faced a downturn in their batting performance as the remaining six wickets fell for a mere 38 runs, while Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi took five wickets, concluding with figures of 5-54.
Pakistan initiated their response with a foundation set by Abdullah Shafique (64) and Imam-ul-Haq (70), forming a substantial 134-run opening partnership. However, the remainder of the top order couldn’t capitalize on encouraging beginnings, resulting in their dismissal for a total of 305.
Australia’s standout bowler, spinner Adam Zampa, made a significant impact by dismantling the middle order, concluding with impressive figures of 4-53. This performance propelled Australia to the fourth position, tying with Pakistan at four points but holding a superior net run rate.
