Fact Check: Does This Video Show Manipur Police Beating Kuki Villagers? Here’s The Truth

Amidst the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, a video showing multiple security personnel assaulting civilians is widely circulated on social media, claiming that Kuki villagers are being assaulted by police.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: Manipur police atrocities on kuki-zo villager ( unarmed )Tun hnai ami ani lo thenkhatin anti ka chiangbiklo aw”.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, the NM team spotted a Facebook page carrying a similar video on March 6, 2022, with a caption: “Poll violence reported in Saibol Tengnaoupal, Manipur on 5th March 2022”. The video shows police beating people who were allegedly attempting to destroy the polling booth in Saibol.

As per E-PAO, Tengnoupal police filed a case against six Naga People’s Front (NPF) workers for damaging an EVM at the Saibol polling station during the second phase of Manipur’s legislative assembly elections in March 2022. The NPF workers allegedly threatened polling personnel and destroyed the EVM, but they were apprehended by security forces and handed over to the Tengnoupal police station.

Our team also identified a video on YouTube uploaded by an unverified channel  ‘kanam jem media’. The video, titled, “MLA ELECTION 2nd phase Amun:42/13 Saibol polling station, Tengnoupal AC,” was uploaded on March 5, 2022, containing visuals similar to the viral video.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video of Manipur police beating people involved in alleged EVM tampering is falsely linked to the recent Manipur violence.
