World Hepatitis Day, observed on 28 July each year tries to spread awareness about this serious infectious disease. Hepatitis is a disease caused by viral infection which leads to inflammation of the liver.

What is hepatitis?

It is an inflammation of the liver. The condition can be worsened and grow on to become fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer.


Hepatitis A and E are caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids, such as receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact


Some types of hepatitis can heal without any intervention. However, hepatitis can sometimes progress to liver cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and in such cases, patients may have to take rest and refrain from consuming any drugs and alcohol during the recovery period. Furthermore, a medical professional may even prescribe antiviral agents or other antiviral suppressive therapies. In the case of hepatitis C infection, a patient is more likely to be prescribed antiviral agents.

However, chances are that even at the time of acute infection, no symptom shows up, therefore routine check-ups are a must.

Prevention of Hepatitis:

1. Live and practice good eating habits. Maintain a strategic distance from fried or junk food.

2. Avoid liquor as it is harmful to the liver whenever expended in enormous amounts. With some restraint and with a sound way of life, it may represent no issues.

3. Carcinogenic components present in cigarettes may represent a danger as well. This may likewise put inactive smokers at high hazard too.
