Fact Check: Swedish Video Goes Viral As Special ‘Manidarshan Sunrise’ In Himalayas

A video has gone viral on social media, claiming that it is of Manidarshan, a special sunrise that takes place in the Himalayas at 3.30 am in the morning.

The video is shared with a caption:यह एक अद्भुत सूर्योदय है जिसे मणिधरसन कहते हैं। जो हिमालय में सुबह 3.30 बजे उगता है। यह (इगला, पिंगला, सुषमा) का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है और इसे वर्धमान भी कहा जाता है। इसे भगवान शिव विश्वरूप दर्शन भी कहते हैं। बहुत ही दुर्लभ फोटोग्राफी…☝️ #copied (English translation: This is an amazing sunrise called Manidarshan, which takes place at 3.30 am in the Himalayas. NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Through a Reverse Image Search, we found the same video uploaded by a YouTube channel in January 2019, with a title “Parahelio | Sundog | Sweden”.

A user had also uploaded the same video on YouTube in December 2018, with a title: “Parahelio – Natural Phenomenon of Sweden”.

Running a keyword search, we found similar visuals spotted in the Swedish sky in 2019 and 2017, too.

After the video of this rare phenomenon went viral, NASA explained what it is. According to NASA, it is called Sun Dog, i.e., when extra images of the sun are created by falling ice crystals in Earth’s atmosphere.

NASA mentioned that this happens when ‘an observer finds themselves in the same plane as many of the falling ice crystals near sunrise or sunset. During this alignment, each crystal can act like a miniature lens, refracting sunlight into our view and creating phenomena like parhelia, the technical term for sundogs. And, it is clear that the above video shows a phenomenon called Sundog that can be witnessed in Sweden.

Also, several videos on YouTube of sunrise at Manimahesh Peak situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. Manidarshan is often referred to as the view when the sun is at the tip of the peak and gives an impression of the diamond on Lord Shiva’s crown. The videos can be seen here and here.

Hence, it is clear that the viral post is false.
