Amit Shah To Visit Violence-Hit Manipur ‘Soon’, Says ‘Should Maintain Peace’

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made an appeal to the people of Manipur to safeguard peace and harmony. He announced that he would be going there soon, promising a three-day trip that would be beneficial.

“There were clashes in Manipur after the verdict of a court. I would appeal to both groups to maintain peace; justice will be done for everyone. I will myself go to Manipur after a few days, stay there for three days, and talk to the people of Manipur about establishing peace,” Shah said at an event.

Shah added, saying justice will be done for everyone in the state.

The union minister’s announcement came after fresh clashes broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki communities on Monday.

Earlier this month, a wave of clashes erupted in the hilly state, triggered by a solidarity march organised by tribal communities on May 3.

The march was organised by the tribals to express opposition to the Meiteis’ community request to become a Scheduled Tribe.

Over 70 people lost their lives, and thousands were displaced as a result of the violence.
