Imphal: Following a period of tenuous calm, army and paramilitary forces were hurried to the violently affected Manipur on Monday after fresh clashes broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki communities.
The New Checkon area in Imphal, the state capital, is where clashes between the Meitei and Kuki populations reportedly reached their peak. A disagreement regarding territorial claims inside a local market was the main source of the violence.
After the new conflicts, curfew was once again declared.
Earlier this month, a wave of clashes erupted in the hilly state, triggered by a solidarity march organised by tribal communities on May 3.
The march was organised by the tribals to express opposition to the Meiteis’ community request to become a Scheduled Tribe. Over 70 people were reported to have lost their lives as a result of the violence.
