Fact Check: Unrelated Video Falsely Shared As Hoisting Of Pak Flag After Congress Wins Karnataka Elections

After the Congress party’s victory in Karnataka elections, a video showing a huge crowd of Muslims celebrating by hoisting Pakistani flag is widely shared on social media, claiming that Hindu voters in Karnataka will face severe consequences as a result.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ఇది పాకిస్తాన్ లో తీసిన వీడియో అనుకునేరు. (English translation: You will think that this video is taken in Pakistan. For the leaders who are shouting that BJP is doing religious politics… Karnataka Hindu voters will have to pay a heavy price very soon. If they change at least after watching this useless video, it will be like they are in India. Otherwise, Pakistanis who fight for wheat flour will face the same fate..)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified a YouTube video carrying the same video from a different angle on November 11, 2019, with a caption: “Golibar chowk kudchi”, suggesting that this video was taken in Koodachi town of Karnataka state.

We also found a video posted on the Facebook page of a Kannada news agency on November 12, 2019. The video can be seen at the 1 minute 48 seconds mark. According to the description of the video, Muslims in Kudachi town were celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi by distributing sweets, playing songs on loudspeakers, and rejoicing on the streets.

Below is the comparison between the viral video and the Facebook video. Upon careful observation of the green flag hoisted by Muslims during the celebration of Milad-un-Nabi in the video, it can be determined that the flag is an Islamic religious flag and not the national flag of Pakistan

Thus, it is evident that an old unrelated video is falsely linked to the Karnataka poll results.
