Fact Check: Did Pak PM Sharif Congratulate Congress For Winning Karnataka Polls? Here’s The Truth

Date:

After the Congress party’s thumping victory in Karnataka elections, a screenshot of a tweet, allegedly posted by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is widely shared on social media. In the tweet, he congratulates the “people of Karnataka” for electing Congress in the Assembly elections, and hopes for “strengthening of Islam in India and the sovereignty of Karnataka.”

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ये है कांग्रेस की सच्चाई । पाकिस्तान से आई कर्नाटक चुनाव में जीत की बधाई” (English translation: This is the reality of Congress. Congratulations on victory in the Karnataka elections from Pakistan)

Here’s the link to the viral post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

The Twitter handle of Shehbaz Sharif, however, does not carry any such tweet. Shehbaz Sharif posted only three tweets on May 13, and all were unrelated to Karnataka election results. Check here, here, here

The analytics tool Social Blade also confirms that only three tweets were posted by him on May 13, 2023.

Even the Twitter advanced keyword search could not find any such tweet posted by Shehbaz Sharif.

Also, there was no credible news article corroborating the viral claim. Had Shehbaz Sharif made any such statement related to the Karnataka election results, mainstream media would have covered it.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral tweet is fake.
