Fact Check: 2022 Video Goes Viral As Recent Protests After Imran Khan’s Arrest

Date:

Former Pakistan Prime Minister, and the Chief of PTI, Imran Khan, was recently apprehended outside the Islamabad High Court amidst corruption accusations, leading to widespread protests throughout the nation.

Against this backdrop, a viral video claiming Khan’s followers have taken to the streets in support of their leader is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: This was last night, The crowds will be bigger today to protect Imran Khan #BehindYouSkipper

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a tweet carrying the same video on the official handle of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), dated May 10, 2023. The video has been posted with the same claim, but several comments under it point out that it is from April 2022.

Several Facebook posts on unverified pages, dated April 10, 2022 carry the video that match with the recent viral post. This confirms that the video has been online since last year and thus cannot be related to the recent arrest of Imran Khan.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show PTI supporters protesting against the arrest of their leader Imran Khan, is false.
