FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we spotted a YouTube live video titled: LIVE: Joint mega rally | Hubballi, Karnataka |, streamed live on May 6, 2023, on the official channel of the Indian National Congress. According to the description, the video is about the joint mega rally by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi in Hubballi, Karnataka, ahead of the state assembly polls on May 10, 2023.
The keyframes starting at 22:29 match exactly with the viral clip where Kharge can be seen standing while the Gandhis arrive and take their seats. But watching the full video it is clearly seen that after their arrival, Kharge moves to the podium to give his speech. As soon as Kharge’s name is announced, everyone seated on stage, stands up to support him.
Searching further, we found a broadcast tweet from the same day showing the live feed from the event. Here too, at the 12:00 mark, we see Kharge standing and moving towards the podium for his speech. This confirms that the viral video has been clipped in order to mock Congress.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Congress chief Kharge waited for Sonia Gandhi’s permission to sit, is misleading.
