Fact Check: Old Video Of PM Modi’s Gujarat Rally Falsely Linked To Wrestlers’ Protest In Delhi

Date:

On May 9, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (a non-political alliance of farmer unions), BKU (Ekta Sidhupur), and Krantikari Kisan Union from Punjab arrived at the Jantar Mantar protest site in Delhi to show support for the champion wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia from Haryana. The wrestlers have been protesting since April 23, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India, and a Rajya Sabha member, who is facing charges of sexual harassment.

Against this backdrop, a video of the huge crowd gathered at a green roundabout is widely shared on social media, claiming that it is people’s support for the wrestlers’ movement.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Support from all over India #wrestlersprotest #istandwithmychampions”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified a tweet carrying the same viral video on September 30, 2022, with a caption: “OBC class in the capital #OBC_शहीद_स्मारक_चलो #OBC_हक_छीन_कर_लेगा”. This clearly means that the video is not recent. We also noticed that while replying to this tweet a user commented that this clip is of a roadshow held in Surat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi’s YouTube channel also carries the similar video, dated September 29, 2022, with a caption: “PM Modi holds roadshow in Surat, Gujarat.

The same statue of a person riding the horse was found both in the viral video and PM Modi’s YouTube channel. The video also shows the presence of BJP flags, saffron-coloured flags on one side of the road, and three white shades on the other side, which are also seen in the viral video.

Searching further, we found the statue seen in the viral video is of Rani Lakshmi Bai, which is situated in the Nilgiri Circle area of Surat, Gujarat.

Thus, we can conclusively say that an old video of PM Modi’s roadshow in Surat is falsely linked to the ongoing wrestlers’ protest in Delhi.
