Fact Check: Truth Behind TMC Guidelines For People To Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses

Date:

On April 16, 2023, around 11 people died and about 20 hospitalised in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, because of heatstroke when they attended the ceremony for the Maharashtra Bhushan a civilian award presented by the state government. It is estimated that over one million people attended the event and many more suffered from dehydration and other illness due to the ongoing heat wave.

Against this backdrop, a viral picture showing an advisory for people to protect themselves from heat strokes and other heat-related illnesses is doing the rounds on social media. People have shared the picture claiming that it has been issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: Mumbai n Thane is facing severe heatwaves with temp being 42 degrees. There has been a lot of sun stokes. TMC has come out with this leaflet for its citizens. Quite informative

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

We noticed the logo of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the bottom left of the picture, instead of any sign or logo of the TMC.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to know more about the advisory, we traced the official website of CDC finding the same advisory under the section Warning Signs and Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness.

The same advisory was also attached as a PDF below the picture.

We also checked whether Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) issued any such advisory or not. But our search yielded no such results.

Furthermore, we found a news article on Times Now, dated April 18, 2023, informing about the set of guidelines issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to safeguard the citizens from the ongoing heatwave.

While the dos and don’ts are very informative, the suggestions do not match the viral picture, confirming that the latter has nothing to do with TMC or any other governing body of Maharashtra.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming that TMC issued an advisory for people to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses, is false.
