Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a YouTube live stream video, dated April 11, 2023, on Rahul Gandhi’s official channel. The video titled: Public Meeting | Kalpetta, Wayanad | Kerala, streamed Gandhi’s public address during his visit to his former constituency Wayanad.
At the 1:07:45 mark, we can see a person, with his hands cut off, brought on stage with Gandhi’s poster in his left hand and waving the politician with his right hand. At 1:08:22, we can see the person extend his right arm to shake hands with Gandhi.
Searching further, we came across a tweet by Lavanya Ballal Jain, National Social Media Co-coordinator of the Indian National Congress, dated April 12, 2023. In his tweet, Jain debunks the claim made in the viral video and clearly states that it is a doctored clip.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Sevadal posted a tweet on the same day showing Gandhi hugging the same man. Here too, we can see that the man is holding Gandhi’s poster in his right hand. So, it proves that the man is not armless.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Rahul Gandhi tried to shake hands with an armless man, is misleading.
