Fact Check: Old Video From Haryana Shared As Documents Found On Roadside In Gujarat

Date:

A video showing several passports and Aadhaar cards lying scattered on road has gone viral on social media. Some people say this incident is from Bet Dwarka in Gujarat, where these papers have been seized from thousands of illegal Muslims settled.

(English translation: Based on how thousands of illegal Muslims were living near Bet Dwarka in Gujarat, it can be estimated that thousands of Kasabs have been settled in the country. Your soul will be shaken by seeing these passports, Aadhaar cards and documents available from the farm.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

People in the video can be heard talking in Punjabi. Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and found the same clip uploaded on a verified Twitter handle, dated July 10, 2022, with a caption: “In Punjab, dozens of Indian passports and Aadhaar cards found by farmers. What is going on?” We found the same video also uploaded on Facebook dated March 11, 2018.

A news report by Jagran, dated March 11, 2018, carries glimpses from the viral video stating: “On Saturday evening, on the road leading from village Chakerian to Lakdanwali, villagers found hundreds of passports scattered on the roadside. In total, 256 passports were found.” The Tribune also carried information related to the incident in 2018 with the headline: “258 passports found dumped in Sirsa village”. “The police recovered 258 passports found abandoned on the roadside from Chakerian to Lakranwali village,  Kalanwali area in Sirsa district, last evening,” reads the report.

According to a news report by Hindustan Times, police found a link between this incident to Bathinda in the mass seizure of passports in Sirsa. A complaint of missing 254 passports was lodged at the Civil Line Police Station of Bathinda. These passports were sent from Chandigarh to Bathinda by speed post but they were stolen.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is neither recent nor from Gujarat.
