Prayagraj: A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj convicted gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and two others accused in the 2006 kidnapping of Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.
Seven others, including Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, were acquitted.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The MP-MLA court sentences Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi and Khan Saulat Hanif to life imprisonment; also imposes a fine of ₹1 lakh.
- All the other seven accused, including the brother of Atiq Ahmed – Ashraf – acquitted.
- Ahmed was brought from Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj’s Naini jail by a 45-member team of Uttar Pradesh police on Monday.
- Security has been beefed up outside Naini jail.
- Outside of Sabarmati jail, Ahmed told reporters that a conspiracy is being hatched to kill him on the pretext of following court orders.
- Ahmed is the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2006 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two security personnel were shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24 this year.
