You Can’t Have Family Commitments: Sunil Gavaskar On Rohit Sharma Missing First ODI

Date:

Mumbai: As criticism continues to unravel from all sides after India lost the ODI series against Australia, Indian veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at skipper Rohit Sharma for missing out on the first match due to “family commitments”.

Sunil Gavaskar while speaking on Star Sports expressed that he was unhappy with the decision taken by Rohit Sharma and added that the side needs continuity in leadership.

According to reports, Gavaskar added “I think he needs to play every game. You can’t have a captain who is there for one match and not there for the rest. It is so important. It can happen to any other player. I know it was a family commitment, so he had to be there. That’s understandable”.

Highlighting the upcoming ICC World Cup later this year, Gavaskar said that “When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different”.

Gavaskar added that in these situations a team needs “continuity in leadership” as “There’s a feeling that you have got everybody with you, otherwise there are two leaders. Then there are two leaders that the team is looking at”.

With the end of this series, India now gears up for the upcoming mega contest against Australia in the finals of the World Test Championship starting from June 7.
