Fact Check: 2019 Post of a Maulana Issuing Fatwa Not to Buy Goods from Hindus Goes Viral As Recent

A video showing a Maulana standing in a crowd and giving speech is widely shared on social media. It is claimed that the Maulana in Barmer, Rajasthan, has issued a fatwa for all Muslims not to buy any goods from the shops of Jats, Gujjars and Chaudharys, nor sit in their vehicles.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “आज राजस्थान के अंदर बाड़मेर में मौलाना ने फतवा जारी किया है कि जाट, गुर्जर,चौधरीयों से कोई समान कोई भी वस्तू ना खरीदें साथ ही इनकी किसी भी गाड़ी में ना बैठें यह जमात के लोग पूरे भारत की मस्जिदों में घूम घूम कर मुसलमानों को इकट्ठा करके इस तरह का फतवा देते रहे हैं”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING. 

Performing a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords, we spotted a Facebook post, dated July 1, 2019, carrying the same viral video with a description that it is from Gagariya village in Barmer, Rajasthan.  

Replying to a tweet that carried the viral video on March 14, 2023, Barmer Police also clarified that the video is from 2019. The police said that a fatal collision involving a private bus occurred on June 28, 2019, in front of a gas station in the town of Gagaria, home of police station Ramsar. A family member had previously delivered a speech along these lines at the protest by the deceased person’s family against this tragedy. And appropriate legal action had been taken against that person.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is not recent.
