Fact Check: Image of Turkey Earthquake Viral As Aftermath of Recent Earthquake in J&K

A strong earthquake with 6.5 magnitude struck large parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan on the night of March 21, 2023, leaving at least 12 people dead and more than 40 injured. The tremors of the quake were also felt across northern India.

In the above context, a picture of a damaged building is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that the quake left three people dead in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir.

putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the same image in a report by NBC News, dated February 6, 2023, with a headline: Scenes of grief and destruction after devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

But a tweet by the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara clarifies that the viral claim is fake. The tweet reads: “I myself in Karnah. There is no loss of any life or property. The news spread on social media platform regarding three deaths is concocted and baseless. Please don’t spread such fake news.”

Thus, it is clear that the viral claim is false.
