Fact Check: Edited Image Of PTI Supporters From 2014 Viral With Misleading Claims

Date:

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been charged with over 85 cases since the time he was removed from power last year. Islamabad High Court issued an arrest warrant against him recently, and he somehow evaded the arrest. He instead filed a petition in the same court requesting the cancellation of the warrant. Since then, there has been a growing tussle between PTI supporters and the authorities.

Against this backdrop, a picture showing some men pointing guns out of a moving car is doing the rounds on social media. The picture claims that the people are supporters of PTI. Many users have mocked Khan’s party by calling it a law-abiding party.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption:

PTI is a law-abiding party

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, we traced an article on an African news channel eNCA, dated August 15, 2014 and titled: Imran Khan’s PTI attacked on Islamabad march

The image in the article matches the viral picture except for the guns in their hands. Going through the image description, we came to know that the men were supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Indaf (PTI) and they were on their way to take part in the Azadi (Freedom) march on August 15, 2014.

Searching the picture with relevant keywords, we also found the same picture uploaded on Getty Images, with a title: PTI supporters arrive in Islamabad for anti-government protest, matches exactly with the image from eNCA. Here too, we can’t see any guns in the hands of supporters. This proves that the viral image has been edited.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image claiming to show PTI supporters carrying guns in a car is misleading.
