New Delhi: After a video went viral in which a young Japanese woman went viral in which she was groped, harassed and manhandled by a group of men during Holi celebrations, Delhi Police on Saturday arrested three men including a juvenile.
“Three persons, including one juvenile, have been apprehended and questioned. They have confessed their involvement in the incident as seen in the video. They all are residents of a nearby area of Paharganj,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Sanjay Kumar Sain was quoted by newswire PTI.
All of them were apprehended after the police took suo motu action.
However, further legal action will be decided on merits and in accordance with the complaint by the girl, if any, police said added. A senior police officer said that neither the girl nor the Japanese officials made any complaint, adding that the police acted after netzines expressed outrage.
In the viral video, the men groped her and smeared colours on her. One man even smashed an egg on her head. The woman, as seen in the video, found it hard to leave the gang of men. But she continued saying ‘bye’ ‘bye’ in an attempt to exit that group. She smiled once on the camera and as one of the men again touched her, she slapped him and left the place.
According to reports, a Japanese woman posted and deleted the video. No police complaint was lodged.
Reportedly, Delhi Police said it saw the video and wrote to the embassy for the details of the woman. The details of the men seen in the video are also being collected, police said, as reported by ANI.
“@NCWIndia has taken cognizance. Chairperson @sharmarekha has written to @CPDelhi to immediately file FIR in the matter. NCW has also sought a fair and time-bound investigation in the matter. A detailed report must be apprised to the Commission,” the National Commission for Women tweeted.
Very distrubing videos getting viral on social media showing sexual harassment with foreign nationals on Holi! I am issuing notice to Delhi Police to examine these videos and arrest the perpetrators! Completely shameful behaviour!
