Fact Check: Unrelated Image Falsely Linked To Alleged Attack On Bihar Migrants In Tamil Nadu

Date:

Amid rumoured attacks on Bihar migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, an image of an injured man is widely shared on social media, claiming that the person is a labourer hailing from Bihar, who had to face violence in Tamil Nadu for speaking the Hindi language.

(English translation: Hindi-speaking labourers are being killed in Tamil Nadu. What are you doing, Akir Mon? Why are you not saving the lives of Bihari labourers? we have received many videos in which #Hindi speaking brothers are being beaten badly, stones are being pelted on the head, knives stabbing #ghopkar We are going to die, we strongly request Nitish Kumar to bring our Bihari brothers from Tamil Nadu and save their lives, otherwise everyone from #Bihar will have to go to Delhi by force. #Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is also in Delhi. There will be the decision to cross)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we spotted a news report published by BBC Tamil carrying the same viral image on February 13, 2023. According to the article headline, the image is related to a double murder that happened in Coimbatore. The report further states that two persons named Gokul and Manoj were going to court on February 13 for the hearing of a case. Later, a gang attacked them. Gokul died in the attack and Manoj got a deep injury on his head. The viral picture is of this Manoj.

Another picture of injured Manoj has also appeared in a news item in The Hindu (Tamil) giving the same information. The report also states that Gokul, who was killed in the attack, was a habitual criminal. In December 2021, he was accused of killing a man named Shriram. The police suspect that Gokul was murdered to avenge this. The Hindu (English) also published a screenshot of the video of this incident.

The DGP of Tamil Nadu Police has told that this video is from Coimbatore and the people involved in it are from Coimbatore only. It has nothing to do with Bihari migrant labourers.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an unrelated image is falsely linked to the alleged attack on Bihar migrants in Tamil Nadu.
