‘How Many Demerit Points Did Gabba Get’ Says Sunil Gavaskar Over ICC’s ‘Poor’ Pitch Verdict

Date:

Indore: Veteran Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar lashed out over the ICC’s ‘poor’ verdict on the pitch of the Holkar Stadium used for the third test match in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Earlier on Friday, ICC rated Indore’s pitch as ‘poor’ under its Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process. ICC in an official statement added that “ICC Match Referee Chris Broad submitted his report to the ICC expressing the concerns of the match officials and after consulting with captains of both teams. Following the assessment, the venue has received three demerit points,”.

According to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, a venue gets suspended from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months if it accumulates five or more demerit points over a five-year rolling period.

Talking about the verdict, Sunil Gavaskar during a conversation with India Today said that “One thing I would like to know, there was this Test match in November in Brisbane Gabba, where the match finished in 2 days. How many demerit points did that pitch get and who was the match referee there?”

He further added that “I think 3 demerit points is a little harsh, because, in this pitch, yes the ball turned, but it was not dangerous. When Australia gets to a score of 77 for the loss of one wicket it actually tells you that the pitch got a lot better.”

The Gabba pitch during the series between South Africa and Australia in 2018 remained in the centre of criticism even by South Africa’s skipper Dean Elgar.

India lost the third test match against Australia. Both the teams will play the final test match of the series in Ahmedabad from 9th March.
