Fact Check: Newspaper Clipping Spreading Rumours About Attacks on Hindi-speaking people in Tamil Nadu is FAKE

Date:

A newspaper clipping claiming that migrant workers from Bihar are being killed in Tamil Nadu is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the picture claiming that Chief Minister Stalin has given an ultimatum to all the Hindi-speaking people to leave the state before March 20, 2023.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: तमिलनाडु मे हिदी मजदूरो को जान से मार दिया जा रहा है (English translation: Hindi labourers know in Tamil Nadu being killed by)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be fictitious.

Had the state government announced such an ultimatum to all the Hindi-speaking people, it would have made major headlines immediately. However, we found a news clipping on Dainik Jagran — Lucknow’s logo on the header. So, we checked online for the newspaper for March 2, 2023, and identified an e-paper for the same day on Jionews

We could not find any news related to the viral clipping. Moreover, the design language in the latter differs entirely from the colour scheme of the original Dainik Jagran newspaper. A stark difference can easily be seen here:

We also came across a March 2, 2023 tweet by the official account of Tamil Nadu Police. The tweet shows a video message from the Director General of Police. In the message, he informs that there were a few videos going viral in the name of attacks on migrant workers from Bihar.

Although there was no information about any news headline or government order to vacate the state, he debunked other false claims and ensured that every citizen of the state was safe and secure and that the authorities are keeping a close eye to ensure the safety of the residents.

Another news article in The Hindu, titled: “Hindi-speaking people in T.N. are not being targeted for attacks, says Director General of Police” informs that the DGP has confirmed that the Hindi-speaking people are not being attacked in the state and the rumours and accusations are false. The article also confirms that the DGP ensured that law and order is  maintained strictly in Tamil Nadu and all people are living peacefully.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral news clipping claiming that Hindi-speaking people are being attacked in Tamil Nadu and that the government has asked all Hindi-speaking citizens to leave the state is fabricated.
