Fact Check: Video of Zelensky’s Press Meet on First Anniversary of Ukraine-Russia War Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

A video clip of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a press conference, claiming that Ukraine needs American soldiers to fight and die for them, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the post criticising the US government’s support of Ukraine in the war.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: Zelensky is demanding American sons and daughters fight and die for Ukraine.

I hope, many of you are waking up to what’s really happening.

You’ve been lied to.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Google Keyword Search to know whether Zelensky gave any such interview recently or not, we spotted a YouTube live video, titled: LIVE: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks on anniversary of Russia’s invasion, streamed on February 24, 2023, on the official channel of Reuters. The video shows a press conference conducted by Zelensky on the occasion of one year anniversary of the Ukraine-Russia war.

At about 1:37:49, we see Ian Pannell, Chief Foreign correspondent for ABC News, ask him about his views on the increasing belief in Americans that the US is giving too much support to Ukraine in the war. Then he speaks about the Americans and their participation in the war. He agrees with Pannell but informs of the consequences if Ukraine loses the war.

He says, “The US is never going to give up on the NATO member states. If it happens so that Ukraine, due to various opinions, and weakening and depleting of assistance, loses, Russia is going to enter Baltic states, NATO member states, and then the US will have to send their sons and daughters exactly the same way as we are sending their sons and daughters to war, and they will have to fight because it’s NATO that we are talking about. And they will be dying, God forbid, because it’s a horrible thing. I wish peace and Ukrainian support to the United States.”

It is here that he speaks about Americans going into the war, and it is clear that his statement has been made viral out of context. We found a similar live stream on the official channel of DW New  a German public broadcaster service, as well.

We also came across a news article on a Russian state-controlled international news network RT from February 25, 2023. The article titled: Zelensky threatens unsupportive Americans, corroborates the fact that Zelensky made the viral statement while explaining the consequences of Ukraine losing to Russia in the war.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Zelensky asked Americans to participate in the war for Ukraine, is misleading.
