Fact Check: Video of Violence Outside Coimbatore Court Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

A video on violence has surfaced on Internet showing few men brutally beating another man in broad daylight. A few social media users claim that the incident took place in Tiruppur on February 22, 2023.

The caption of one such post with the video reads: “Tamil Nadu Tirupur 22/2/2023”

The above post can be seen here (archive) (viewers’ discretion advised).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be misleading.

Putting the keyframes of the video through a Reverse Image Search, we found several news reports featuring the screengrabs from the same video.

India Today report stated that the incident took place on February 13, 2023, behind the Coimbatore court complex, when two men were attacked by a gang of five men. More such reports can be seen here and here.

For better understanding, with the help of Google Maps, we further discovered that the place of the incident (Coimbatore court complex) is about 57 km away from Tirupur, as mentioned in the viral post.

So, we can conclusively say that the incident in the viral video took place on February 13, 2023, in Coimbatore, NOT on February 22, 2023, in Tiruppur.
