Fact Check: 2019 Video on Gujarat Riots Erroneously Linked to the Recent BBC Controversy

Date:

In the wake of controversy over the BBC documentary on PM Modi and the Gujarat riots, a video of what seems like a television panel discussion is doing the rounds on social media, showing the man on the screen talking about the 2002 Godhra massacre and Gujarat Riots. It is being claimed that the man in the video is a Pakistani news anchor.

The text on the video reads: “जो हिन्दुस्तानी पत्रकार नहीं कर पाए वो एक पाकी पत्रकार ने कर दिखाया” (English translation: What Indian journalists could not do, a Pakistani journalist did it)

Another caption with the same video reads: जिन्होंने लगभग पूरी दुनिया पर राज किया लेकिन आज उनकी लगी पड़ी है तो वे बिलबिला कर हमें बदनाम करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं BBC की documentry दिखा कर लेकिन सांच को आंच नहीं लगती। (English translation: Those who ruled almost the entire world, today they are in trouble, so they are trying to defame us by showing BBC’s documentary, but the truth is not affected.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be misleading.

Upon closely observing the video in question, we noticed the name tag of the man talking Uday Chauhan, Political Analyst. We also noticed Bilatakalluf Tahir Aslam Gora, written on the video.

Running a Google search with relevant keywords, we spotted the longer version of the same video on YouTube. The exact bit can be seen from 20:49 minutes onwards.

The video was posted on a Canada based verified YouTube channel, Tahir Gora, on April 15, 2019.

As the BBC controversy happened in February 2023, it is clear that the viral video is four years old and not connected with the recent controversy.
