Fact Check: Video from Turkey Viral as Destruction Caused by Earthquake in Tajikistan

A video of collapsed buildings is doing the rounds on social media claiming that it was taken after an earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck Tajikistan on February 23, 2023.

The video is shared with a caption: Devastating earthquakes struck #Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. An earthquake with 7.2 magnitude and a depth of 10 kilometres struck eastern Tajikistan. The region where the earthquake hit in Tajikistan was sparsely populated and surrounded by the Pamir mountains. Kazakhstan was also struck by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in a mountainous area.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Running a Google Reverse Image Search, we traced the same video uploaded on YouTube on February 8, 2023, mentioning that the visuals are from Turkey.

Carefully watching the video, we noticed boards that read ‘CRANE’, ‘Barış Tavukçuluk’ and ‘BASMANLAR’.

We found that these shops are in Turkey. The location of the video was also confirmed  through Google Street view.

Thus, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video is from Turkey, NOT Tajikistan.
