Fact Check: Doctored Image Falsely Linked to US President Biden’s Recent Visit to Ukraine

Date:

On February 20, US President Joe Biden visited Ukraine’s Kyiv amid a surprise trip days before the anniversary of the Russian invasion. As the US pledged more security support for Ukraine, Biden, who met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been “dead wrong” to believe Russia could outlast Ukraine and its Western friends.

Against this backdrop, an image of Biden eating ice cream is widely shared on social media linking it to his recent visit to Kyiv. The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “This is a COOL pic of President Biden enjoying an ice cream cone, a chocolate one, in Kyiv, Ukraine!”

Here’s the link to the above post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we found the same image uploaded on the New York Post, dated May 27, 2021, with a caption: “President Joe Biden eating an ice cream cone in Cleveland, Ohio”.

Below is the comparison between the viral image and the image in above-mentioned news report. We found both images to be identical, except for the background.

We traced a video news report by The Washington Post carrying similar visuals of Joe Biden eating ice cream on May 28, 2021. The video description reads: “President Biden greeted a crowd outside Honey Hut Ice Cream near Cleveland on May 27, while eating a cone of chocolate chocolate-chip ice cream.”

A website Kyiv Guide has also carried the same shop seen in the background of the viral image. Through Google search, we have found that ‘Kyivska Perepichka’ is a famous street food joint in Kyiv.

The precise image was identified as the background for the viral image purportedly depicted Biden enjoying ice cream in Kyiv. On October 24, 2017, the photo was posted on the Four Square website.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old edited image is falsely linked to Biden’s recent visit to Ukraine’s Kyiv.
