Fact Check: Viral Video Showing People Setting Themselves on Fire During Anti-Encroachment Drive Is from Bihar, Not UP

Date:

On February 13, a mother and her daughter were charred to death during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat. Initially, the reports mentioned that both of them immolated themselves. But later, the deceased’s family claimed that the SDM directed Lekhpal to set fire to their house, while the duo were inside. The matter is still under investigation.

Against this backdrop, a video showing people setting themselves on fire is widely shared on social media, linking it to the ‘bulldozer operation’ in Uttar Pradesh.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “बाबा जी के बुलडोजर चलने की करवाही को लेकर 2 लोगो ने खुद को जिंदा जलाया । उत्तर प्रदेश का रामराज्य” (English translation: Two people burnt themselves alive because of Baba Ji’s bulldozer action. Ramrajya of Uttar Pradesh)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Running the keyframes from the viral video through a Reverse Image Search, we traced a news report by ETV Bharat carrying the same video on February 16, 2023. As per the report, this incident happened in Patna, Bihar. “During the removal of encroachment in Bihar’s Patna, two shopkeepers attempted self-immolation. There was chaos at the time of the incident. Instead of saving the police, she stood and looked at the faces of the people. In a hurry, people somehow extinguished the fire, but the condition of the victim has become serious. Seeing the anger of the people at the time of the incident, the police fled from the spot,” reads the report.

According to Amar Ujala’s report, four people, including hardware shopkeepers Anil Kumar and Munna Kumar, were among those who got burnt in the incident. After the incident, Anil Kumar was immediately admitted to Apollo Burn Hospital. The doctors there referred him to Delhi, but he died before reaching Delhi.

A video report of the incident had also been carried on the official YouTube channel of Mirror Now, with a title: “Breaking News | Patna Anti-Encroachment Drive: Shop Owners Pelt Stones At Cops”.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is from Bihar, not Uttar Pradesh.
