A coin showing the image of Telugu film actor and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) is widely shared on social media, claiming that on the occasion of centenary, the Central government will release a silver coin bearing his image.
The image is shared on Facebook with the caption, “ఎన్టీ రామారావు గారికి దక్కిన అరుదైన గౌరవం శతజయంతి సందర్భంగా రూ.100 నాణెం పై యన్టీఆర్ బొమ్మ… కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం త్వరలోనే ఈ నాణెం విడుదల చేయనుంది జయహో ..”
(English translation: A rare honour for NT Rama Rao On the occasion of centenary, YTR figure on Rs.100 coin…Central government will soon release this coin Jayaho ..)
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
With a keyword search, we found a news report by The Hindu, dated February 15. According to the report, the coin to be released on the occasion of NTR’s centenary is a silver one, and the Indian government will release a 100 rupee silver coin with NTR’s figure on May 28 in his memory. No official images of this coin have been published in news articles. Moreover, the image of the coin in the viral post appears to be a gold or brass coin, and not silver.
This photo had been uploaded in a 2013 post on the nandamurifans.com website. The back side of this coin also has the name of Basavatharakam Cancer Hospital printed on it. There is also a comment under this photo that it is a gold coin, and released in Atlanta, America or somewhere.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old image is falsely shared as a silver coin released by the government to commemorate NTR’s 100th birthday.
