As rescue teams began to wind down their hunt for survivors and the humanitarian effort switched to hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last week, the death toll from that disaster surpassed 37,000.
Against this backdrop, a video purportedly showing the last moments of a family is widely shared on social media linking it to Turkey’s earthquake. The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “The last minutes of the Turkish family’s life was caught on video. An online camera was installed to monitor the nanny.”

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
Extracting keyframes from the viral video and performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified a Facebook page with a clearer version of the viral video, dated January 28, 2020. This clearly means that the viral video cannot be related to the recent Turkey earthquake.
The same video was also uploaded on the YouTube channel “cilgin_family” on November 17, 2020, with a caption: “Earthquake Moment.” We spotted the watermark in the viral video which is similar to this YouTube channel. We checked the about section of this channel and it reads: “we are just having fun.” We looked through several YouTube videos depicting the man shown in the popular video performing various acts, proving that he is a content producer.
A Google search for “cilgin family” reveals a few results in Turkish, indicating that the account belongs to a TikTok producer using the same identity.
Thus, it is evident that an old video is falsely linked to the recent Turkey earthquake.
