Turkey To Sumatra, Deadliest Earthquakes Over The Years

New Delhi: Turkey and Syria are jolted by multiple earthquakes on Monday, claiming more than 2,300 lives so far as rescue and search operations continue in the affected areas.

The country was hit by a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday followed by a 7.6 magnitude quake in the Elbistan district in Kahramanmaraş Province in southern Turkey at 1:27 PM (Local time).

Earthquakes over the years continue to shake humankind with their deadly and catastrophic aftermath impact.

Here is a list of the deadliest earthquakes over the years:

Haiti Earthquake (January 12, 2010)

The earthquake on the West Indian Island of Hispaniola, comprising the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with Haiti was severely impacted by the calamity. The region experienced an earthquake of magnitude 7.0, followed by two aftershocks of magnitudes 5.9 and 5.5. The Haiti Earthquake claimed the lives of more than 3,00,000 people.

Kashmir Earthquake (8 October, 2005)

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the region with its epicentre in the Azad Kashmir region of Pakistan. According to reports, more than 86,000 people lost their lives, about 69,000 people were injured and around 2.8 million people were displaced. The majority of destruction occurred in Muzaffarabad.

Sumatra Earthquake ( December 26, 2004)

An undersea earthquake with a magnitude of reportedly 9.1, hit the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The aftershock had deadly impacts experienced in several neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, India, Thailand. According to reports, the death toll in the region ultimately exceeded 200,000, particularly in the Aceh province of northern Sumatra.

Assam Earthquake (August 15, 1950)

As India was celebrating three years of Independence, a deadly earthquake of 8.6 magnitude jolted the Xizang-India border region with the epicentre located near Rima, Tibet, leaving thousands of people dead and lakhs of them displaced.

Maule (Chile) Earthquake (February 27, 2010)

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred off the coast of central Chile triggering a devastating tsunami followed by mass destruction of property and claiming the lives of more than 500 people.

Nepal Earthquake ( April 25, 2015) 

The city of Kathmandu was jolted after an earthquake of 7.8 struck 34 km east-southeast of Lamjung and 77 km northwest of Kathmandu, claiming lives of around 9,000 people, with thousands left injured.
