Fact Check: Old Video from Miami in US Fictitiously Linked to Recent Turkey, Syria Earthquake

Date:

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on January 6, killing hundreds of people, levelling houses, and spreading tremors as far away as Cyprus and Egypt.

Against this backdrop, a video showing a building collapsing is widely shared on social media, linking it to the deadly earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “The 7.8 magnitude earthquake in central Turkey lasted about 90 seconds, which caused some apartment buildings to collapse. It affected Syria and Lebanon and felt as far as Japan.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced an NBC Miami report carrying the same viral video, dated June 24, 2021, with a title: “Video shows wing of Surfside Condo building collapse in seconds.” Surfside is a beachside town in Florida.

News reports, published in 2021, have also carried the same viral video, saying that a 13-story structure began to quake in the early hours of June 24, 2021, and eventually fell. The same video was also uploaded on a verified Twitter handle on June 24, 2021, with the text, “JUST IN: Video I’ve obtained of the building collapse in Surfside, Florida.”

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a US government agency, had initiated an inquiry to determine what caused the collapse.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video does not show the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
