Fact Check: 2020 Videos of Destruction Shared As Recent Visuals from Turkey

Date:

Following the deadliest earthquake in Turkey and Syria, which claimed over 5,000 lives, several videos are doing the rounds on social media showing the aftermath of earthquake.

One such video is shared with a caption: “BIG BREAKING NEWS
Powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hits southern Turkey. February 6, 2023 ….There are reports of several hundred dead. The entire buildings collapsed in South #Turkey the epicentre of 7.8 magnitude earthquake in last hour.”

The above post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be misleading.

A close look at the video reveals that it is a compilation of two videos. Putting the keyframes of both videos through a Reverse Image Search, we find:

VIDEO 1

Searching through the first part of the compilation, we traced an article in The Guardian, dated October 30, 2020, featuring same video of the building crumbling like a house of cards.

According to the article, the video was from the city of İzmir after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey’s Aegean region on October 30, 2020.

VIDEO 2

In the second part of the compilation, we found a Facebook post, dated October 30, 2020. The caption and location tag of the post suggest that the video is from İzmir city in Turkey.

Another report in The Guardian, dated October 30, 2020, features the same video suggesting that it “shows the aftermath of a deadly earthquake that struck in the Aegean sea and toppled buildings in the Turkish city of İzmir and the Greek island of Samos.”

So, in conclusion, the above findings establish that the video in question is from 2020, and NOT from the recent earthquake in Turkey.
