Fact Check: Old Video of Protest from Andhra Pradesh Falsely Linked to the Recent Rally in Maharashtra

Date:

A viral video showing few men shouting slogans and trying to cross a gate is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the video, claiming that these men are trying to interrupt a Hindutva rally in Maharashtra and the alertness of the authorities prevented a communal riot.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption:  #महाराष्ट्र में Uslim ( #जिहादी ) हिंदुत्व की रैली में विघन डालने का प्रयास करने की कोशिश की। प्रशासन की मुस्तैदी से हिन्दू मुस्लिम दंगा होने से बच गया। लेकिन सेकुलरो को यह शांति दूत की दिखते रहेंगे। (English translation: Tried to disturb Uslim ( #Jihadi ) Hindutva rally in #Maharashtra. Due to the promptness of the administration, Hindu-Muslim riots were saved. But the seculars will continue to see him as a messenger of peace.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a tweet, dated April 26, 2022, on an unverified account.

The video in the tweet matches exactly with the viral clip, informing that the incident is from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, during a Hanuman Shobha Yatra in the city.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search, we found an article in The Quint, dated April 27, 2022, with a title: BJP Alleges Stone-Pelting at Hanuman Shobha Yatra in AP’s Nellore, Police Deny

The image used in the article matches one of the keyframes of the viral video. According to the report, a ‘Hanuman Shobha Yatra’ was organised by the Hindutva group in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh on April 24, 2022. The report also tells about the allegations made by BJP leader Sunil Deodhar to spread communal hatred in the area.

Deodhar tweeted a similar video on his official Twitter account on April 25, 2022, alleging that Muslims threw stones and beer bottles from an illegal mosque, at the Hindus participating in the rally. The police eventually refuted the claims made by the leader.

News about the video was also published in The Hindu and India Today

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Muslims tried to interrupt a Hindutva rally in Maharashtra, is misleading.
