A gunman opened fire outside a synagogue in Jerusalem on January 27, killing at least seven people and injuring three. Against this backdrop, an image showing dead bodies wrapped in white sheets is widely shared on social media linking it to the recent incident of shooting in Jerusalem.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

A Yandex reverse image search on the viral photograph identifies a tweet, dated April 30, 2021, by @RassdNewsN. The post included four photographs, including the viral image, and reported on an accident that occurred during a Jewish “Flame” celebration in Galilee, killing numerous Israelis.

A Russian website has also reported the same incident in April 2021, with a title: “Dozens die in stampede at 100,000 festival in Israel”.

The viral image was included in an article published on the French-language Infos-Israel website on April 30, 2021, while reporting on the mishap that claimed numerous lives during Mount Meron festivities.

Moreover, the viral image was published on various Arabic language websites in their reporting about the April 2021 tragedy during a Jewish holiday in Israel’s Meron district. These reports can be seen here and here.

Thus, it is evident that an old image of a stampede is falsely linked to the recent shooting incident in Jerusalem.
