Fact Check: Image Showing HCU Students Watching BBC Documentary Viral With Misleading Claims

Date:

The Students’ Federation of India has called for a nationwide screening of the controversial BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ following its ban. A screening of the movie on the campus of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) was also met with an unusual kind of retaliation.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) screened the Vivek Agnihotri film The Kashmir Files on the campus on Republic Day, when the BBC documentary was played for the second time at HCU.

Against this backdrop, an image showing a huge gathering of students watching a movie is widely shared on social media claiming that students gathered to watch The Kasmir Files at HCU.

The image is shared with a caption: “ABVP shows The Kashmir files in response to BBC documentary in University of Hyderabad Thank you ABVP for showing the reality”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a Reverse Image Search, we identified the Twitter handle of the Students’ Federation of India’s HCU unit which carried four other similar images on January 26, 2023, with a caption: “Glimpses from the successful screening of the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ organised by SFI HCU on the Republic Day following the call of SFI CEC. More than 400 students turned out for the screening, rejecting the false propaganda and the attempts of ABVP to create unrest and the administration to disrupt the screening of the documentary.”

Other media pieces, including one from The Hindu, include the viral image. The caption reads: “For the second time in a week, the BBC documentary on PM Modi was broadcast at the University of Hyderabad, even though the administration maintained it had not provided permission for it.”

The viral image was included in another report by NDTV. It was also attributed to the SFI unit of HCU.

The screening of The Kashmir Files was attended by around 200 individuals, according to The Times of India. Going through the ABVP-HCU unit’s social media profiles, we found images from the screening. In comparison to the SFI screening, their attendance looked to be lower.

Though The Kashmir Files was screened at Hyderabad Central University, the viral image shows students watching ‘India: The Modi Question’. Therefore, the claim is misleading.
