Fact Check: Old Video of Men Brutally Thrashing Girl in MP Viral with False Claim

A video showing few men brutally thrashing a woman is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that a Dalit girl was beaten for bathing in the river.

The post reads: This Dalit girl is beaten mercilessly for bathing in the river and contaminating the water. 75 years of Independent India, where water has more importance than women.

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

We ran a search and found the screengrab from the same video in an article by The Times of India dated July 5, 2021. The headline of the report read: Madhya Pradesh horror: Sisters beaten brutally by kin for talking to cousins.

According to the report, two sisters were attacked brutally by their kin merely for talking to their cousins over phone. The report also mentioned that the incident took place in Peepalwa village in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh.

Men Brutally Assaulting a Girl

A report by The Hindu mentioned that the women, aged 19 and 20, were beaten up by their kin on June 22, 2021, and police arrested seven people after the video of the incident went viral.

Moreover, we also found posts by UP Police and UP Police Fact Check, where they refuted the viral claim. The post reads: “Verified #FactCheck – This video is not related to Uttar Pradesh but was taken in the year 2021 near Police Station Tanda, District Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.”

Thus, from the above fact check, it is clear that the viral claim is false.
