‘All Not Well In Ladakh’: Sonam Wangchuk Appeals To PM Modi; Plans To Sit On Climate Fast, Here’s Why

Ladakh: Innovator Sonam Wangchuk made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video titled ‘All is not well in Ladakh’.

Wangchuk is planning to sit on a five-day ‘climate fast’ from January 26 at Khardung La pass at 18,000 ft, where the temperature drops to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

In the video, Wangchuk hails PM Modi’s efforts and concern over global warming and other environmentally prone challenges but also expresses concern over the expansion of corporates and businesses in the Ladakh region which has an adverse impact on the already limited resources and minerals of the region.

He highlighted the fact that Ladakh, also known as the ‘third pole’ of the world is facing serious challenges. He talked about the demand for the inclusion of Ladakh under the ‘6th Schedule’.

He points out that the inclusion of Ladakh under the 6th Schedule will ensure all-around development of the region. He said “Ladakh has about 95 per cent tribal population, whereas the Constitution seeks 50 per cent tribal population in an area for the applicability of the Sixth Schedule. It was being speculated that Ladakh would soon join it. Minister Arjun Munda had also assured.”

He also highlighted that the BJP’s victory in the 2020 Ladakh Hill Council elections and the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 resulted in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir forming two independent union regions. He stressed, “People of Ladakh are stunned that the government that responded to its 70-year-old demand for a union territory has not been heeding this demand.”

The constitution requires 50% of a region’s population to be tribal for the 6th Schedule to apply. Wangchuk highlighted that locals of the region are ‘perplexed’ over the fact that governments have ignored the 70-years-old demand.

He urged Prime Minister Modi to interfere in the matter and address the long-standing issue and initiate talks over the union territory.
